So it is now July and Pennsylvania is in quite a heat wave. It’s been in the 90s for the last few days. Streams are low and warm. Trout are stressed. I’m stressed. We need rain. I need to make it rain. So I’ve been tying up some bugs and revamped my website and portfolio to try to do some hustling.
I’ve worked on some hopper variations to hopefully toss in August and September. I looked at Ed Shenk’s Hopper and Cricket and really like them. I dig that they use natural fibers and on a recent eastern trip with the Drifters the hopper came up big time. Lots of trout hooked on that and it was a blast seeing them rise to take it from the stream edges, under logs and grass banks. So fun!
I also have been reading up on some other classic patterns as I work through my Classic Fly Pattern Project. As I peruse Mike Valla’s book — The Founding Flies or Tying the Founding Flies, I pick a pattern and tie a few up. Mostly to learn new techniques and read the history of the patterns. I highly suggest those books if you dig learning how we got to where we are today.
As I briefly mentioned, our eastern trip was a blast despite hot temperatures and missing the Green Drake Hatch on Penns. We ate good, drank some cool adult beverages and laughed a lot, despite not landing a bunch of trout. Tyler Frantz — of Natural Pursuit Outdoors — joined us on the trip and even wrote up a nice article about unplugging and getting away from technology. Just what we all need during this crazy time. You can read it here.
In other news, Penns Woods West Trout Unlimited is stoked to have next year’s Cabin Fever Featured Speaker be Kelly Galloup! I’m really looking forward to that and have been tapped to help out in the promotional materials. Could be some limited edition t-shirts in the mix this year. We’ll see. Years ago, I created the Cabin Fever logo and it has been the face of the event for many years now. So mark your calendars for February 21, 2021 and hope to see you all there.
That’s all for now. Gotta get back to work. Hope everyone is tying flies during this heat wave and dreaming about being on the water fooling trout. Stay safe and well. ~Drifter 07
